All About Me Sensory Boxes

These are communication passports in the form of a box filled with sensory items that tell another person about an individual.

Fill your box (a shoebox is the perfect size) with sensory items relating to a person's life.

These help the people involved in their everyday lives (teaching teams/activity coordinators/support workers) to learn, understand more about the person and to build bonds and are very useful if you have new students in your class this Autumn or a new resident moves into a setting.

If working in an educational setting you can use the student's communication passport as a tool to help you do this, as well working with the student to find out their personal likes and sensory preferences.

If working with adults, involve the person and also ask their family, friends and other people who have been involved in their lives to help you.
You can keep adding new items and the person encounters new experiences (e.g. this might be a seashell from a seaside trip)

Tactile Tiles

Do you still use laminated paper symbols? They become tatty so quickly, are time consuming to make and don't offer a sensory experience.

There is an alternative!

TacTiles are a high contrast for VI, tough, washable and tactile AAC resource that replace laminated symbols.

They are designed by my friend Matt, an SEN teacher at Hebden Green School who has set up his business TacTiles creating the tiles using a 3D printer.
